Mercury retrograde often gets a bad reputation. You hear stories about exes suddenly reappearing, technology failing, accidents happening, and communication breaking down. It feels like everything that can go wrong, does. But what if this period is not just about frustration and chaos? What if it’s an invitation to pause, reassess, and reclaim control over your life?

When things seem out of control during Mercury retrograde, it’s easy to feel defeated. Slips, jumbled words, and unexpected setbacks pile up, making it hard to stay grounded. Yet, beneath these surface troubles lies a deeper message: it’s time to look closely at what’s blocking your path and what needs healing. This season asks you to dig deeper, to get your metaphorical hands in the dirt and explore the roots of your challenges.

What Mercury Retrograde Really Means

Mercury retrograde happens when Mercury appears to move backward in the sky from our viewpoint on Earth. Astrologically, Mercury rules communication, technology, travel, and thought processes. When it retrogrades, these areas often experience disruptions. It also goes retrograde about 3 to 4 times a year. So, of course, you see it in main stream media. It's not doom and gloom. It is also not the time to make excuses for your actions or inactions by simply blaming it on Mercury Retrograde.

Common experiences include:

  • Miscommunications and misunderstandings

  • Technology glitches and delays

  • Travel delays or cancellations

  • Old relationships or issues resurfacing

  • Increased frustration and confusion

These types of issues can feel overwhelming, upsetting and down right frustration, but they are not random. Mercury retrograde invites reflection and review. It slows down the pace to help you notice what you might have missed or ignored. Ignoring a problem/issues/situation, won't make it go away Gorgeous Soul.

When It Rains, It Pours: Understanding the Root of the Issue

You might notice that during Mercury retrograde, problems come in freaking clusters. One thing goes wrong, then another, and suddenly it feels like everything is falling apart all at once. This “when it rains, it pours” feeling is common. In tarot this often feels like a Tower Card moment but it might be something different. And I get it- no wants to hear "slow down", especially when thing have to get done.

Personal note: I just had to finish coordinating a show for work. A job that I didn't even want but was given to me. Volun-Told, if you will. I knew I couldn't keep taking work home and I could feel my body fight against me. The night before the show, I got terribly sick. Not the sick I feel and still go to work. I couldn't get out bed, fever was high and it scared me. I ask for help and it came. I was then forced to stay home, the show went on, it was successful and I nurtured myself. It was the hardest pill to swallow, but what a lesson. You can give and give and make yourself sick over it, but there will always be someone to replace you at work. But what about the family and friends that truly care about you? They don't want to see you give so much.

But why does this happen? Often, these challenges are symptoms of deeper issues that have been building quietly. For example:

  • Old wounds or unresolved conflicts might resurface, especially with ex-partners or past relationships. ( have an ex currently trying to be social media friends with my friends, it's been 7 years since the break up mind you)

  • Unaddressed habits or patterns can cause repeated mistakes or frustrations. (I'm a recovering people pleaser and procrastinator)

  • Hidden fears or doubts may block progress or cloud judgment. (You can do a money spell all you want but if there is block of financial abundance, you won't get the results you think you want)

Mercury retrograde wants you to inspect these roots. Dig deeper than the surface. It asks you to not only take you time to analyze but to slow down and examine what’s really going on beneath the surface.

What You Can Do When Things Feel Out of Control

Feeling powerless during Mercury retrograde is crappy but I will tell you that it's completely normal, but here are ways to call it back.

  • Pause and breathe. I know, I know, but slow deep breaths will begin to regulate your nervous system. When communication breaks down or plans go awry, taking a moment to breathe, unclench your jaw can aid in clearing your mind before reacting especially if you are seeng red.

  • Double-check details. Yup, I know that you totally feel confident you added that attachment to the email, but would it hurt to check again? Also on that topic, review emails (maybe read them outloud use that throat chakra), Pleeeeease reread and take your time with contracts, same with appointments (I set an appointment with a place clear across town not knowing they had multiple locations) plan carefully to avoid misunderstandings.

  • Be patient with technology and travel. Expect delays and have backup plans ready.

  • Reflect on recurring issues. Use this time to journal or meditate on patterns that keep showing up.

  • Set boundaries. If someone won’t listen or respect your needs, it’s okay to step back and protect your energy.

These steps help you move through the retrograde with more ease and less frustration.

I'm taking a breath here to calm my energy and nerves at an appointment that is taking very long.

Digging Deeper: Reassessing What Blocks You

This Mercury retrograde season, I gently invite you to look beyond the surface problems. What is the real block? What old story or belief is holding you back or keeping replaying in your mind?

Here are some journal topics:

  • Digging to the root. Is it fear, guilt, resentment, or something else?

  • Consider the origin. Some blocks have been with you for years or even passed down from family or culture.

  • Acknowledge survival strategies. What you see as a block might have once helped you cope or protect yourself.

  • Give yourself grace. These roots didn’t grow overnight, and they won’t disappear instantly.

Taking time to understand these deeper layers allows you to work with them more compassionately and effectively. Breathe through working with these.

Reclaiming Your Power During Mercury Retrograde

Even when these external events feel chaotic, you have the power to choose your response. Mercury retrograde is a chance to reclaim your strength by:

  • Rechecking your goals and priorities. Things change. Circumstances do to. You grow on your journey, no matter how mundane your life looks. Are you still aligned with what truly matters to you now?

  • Rereading old messages or journals. Sometimes clarity comes from revisiting past thoughts with fresh eyes. Don't journal? Go through old social media posts, texts messages and even your photo gallery.

  • Reevaluating relationships and commitments. Which ones support your growth, and which drain your energy? Again, just because they are family or your friend for years doesn't mean that they will continue walking with you on your journey.

  • Relaxing into the process. Again, I know I know, but stay with me here. Not being "able" to sit still and relax could be a block all on it's own. I'm giving you the permission right now, to allow your self time to sit a do nothing. Accepting that some things are beyond your control may feel like a tailspin. That is just a way you feel safe and that’s okay. Gently start letting go of the reins.

  • Reinforcing healthy habits. Small bite sized routines like mindfulness (breath work), exercise (nothing crazy- try gentle stretching or walking, dancing while cooking) , or creative outlets can ground you.

Remember, this time is about reflection and renewal, not rushing forward.

What If That Person Won’t Listen?

One of the hardest parts of Mercury retrograde can be dealing with people who refuse to hear you. Whether it’s an ex, a colleague, or a family member, communication can feel impossible.

If you find yourself in this situation:

  • Speak your truth clearly and calmly. Avoid blame or anger.

  • Set firm boundaries. Protect your emotional space even if it means stepping away.

  • Focus on what you can control. You cannot change others, but you can control your actions and your peace.

  • Seek support. Talk to trusted friends, counselors, or trusted mentors.

  • Use the time to reflect on your needs. What do you want from this relationship? Is it realistic?

Sometimes the best action is to pause and wait for a better moment to connect.

Final Thoughts on Mercury Retrograde

Mercury retrograde is often seen as a time of chaos, but it also offers a powerful opportunity. When frustrations mount and things feel out of control, it’s a signal to pause and reassess. Dig into the roots of your challenges with patience and importantly kindness. Some blocks have been with you a long time, and they may have served a purpose. You can't stop living life with this planet goes retrograde, but can acknowledge it and give yourself space.

Don't fall into the retrograde doom scroll. A Lot of that is just clickbait and people wanting to get engagement. Maybe you unplug more. Maybe you do something just for you. The retrograde doesn't last forever, sometimes it feels like it does, but don't forget this is part of your journey.
